James Schramko here and we’re going to talk about knowing what you don’t know.
Getting to know what other people know
If you are familiar with the Johari window you’ll know there are 4 quadrants. There are things that you know and that other people know, there are things that you know that other people don’t know, there are things that you don’t know that other people know and there are things that you don’t know that other people don’t know. They’re the 4 quadrants. What’s my point here? The point is there’s plenty of stuff that you don’t know now that other people actually do know and that’s why they get results that you don’t get.
So how do you actually know what you don’t know?
The first step is being aware that there are things that you don’t know. As soon as you say I know, you’re dead because that means you’re a know it all, you’re an expert in everything and you’re not even open minded to the possibility that someone has a better way.
Accepting that you don’t know everything
The first thing is be open minded. Assume that someone out there is doing better things that you or is aware of something that is going to be a better process. Now there’s very little new things in the world and that’s why I like to read books because even books from a hundred years ago can teach us stuff that’s about to happen now especially war books for example.
Every battle plan’s probably been played it’s just whether you know it or not. And that was the key strength of General Patton; he read the books of the people before him.
Knowing that you don’t know everything and seeking out the truth or the better ways is what the steps are so you need to perhaps start reading, perhaps research in fact dedicate a slice of time every day to learning something new that you have not previously understood.
Today what I’ll be doing is reading a new book. I’ll be reading a book about topics that I even know a fair bit about but every time I do I pick up new answers I pick up new subtleties, I pick up a new technique or I get a little aha moment and then the next step is incorporate that as soon as possible into your routine. And now you’ll start to increase your knowledge base and you become aware of things that previously you were ignorant to.
I hope that was helpful, I look forward to catching up with you on another module.
